Yellowstone Cutthroats in Trouble: Learn More

The Beartooth Alliance, an affiliate of the Northern Plains Resource Council, is holding a one day panel discussion on Saturday, July 25th, about the future of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout in streams in and near YNP. The program will be held at the Range Rider Lodge in Silver Gate at the NE entrance to Yellowstone on Highway 212. The panelists will be members of the YNP team of biologists, a biologist from MFW&P, and Wyoming Fish & Game. From the NGO side we will host Craig Matthews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, Bruce Farley, Director of MT Trout Unlimited, Dr. Robert Behnke world renowned trout taxonomist and author of “Trout & Salmon,” the definitive work on the subject. Our special guest will be John Randolph, Publisher Emeritus, of Fly Fisherman Magazine.

This outstanding group of experts will discuss the status and threats to the Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout which are being threatened by invasive rainbow trout that breed with and hybridize this important keystone species. Near Cooke City, in Soda Butte Creek, the Cutthroats are also trying to survive an influx of non-native brook trout. Both of these threats are serious, but the two together in the same watershed demand immediate attention from state and park biologists. It is also extremely important that the people who fish and protect these waters also learn what they can do to help.

Silver Gate and Cooke City are the perfect place for this meeting. You can step outside and cast a line into Soda Butte Creek before or after the meeting. Better yet, plan to come for the weekend and fish the Park’s other nearby streams as well. This is a perfect opportunity to learn what you can do to protect this priceless resource, and you can enjoy a few days of fabulous fishing while you’re here. BEAD 2009 scheduling information

Hi Everybody,
I’m close to winding-up the initial build of this blog. I just figured out a way to write posts now and schedule them to be posted at some future time. I would like to create a series of posts leading up to the annual BEAD. Beyond the date, I am short on details to include. For those who are involved with the planning for the event could you please pass details along to me so that I can write timely content to keep those who might stumble on this blog informed about the fund-raiser.

Welcome to my little self-improvement project for the remainder of the winter months. I am sure that you all have been touched by the economic downturn in many ways. I find myself short of real work that actually generates a paycheck right now. So I thought I would take this opportunity to learn something new. I enrolled in a relatively lengthy on-line course in the open-source software named WordPress. It’s a free program that creates and maintains blogs.

Members of the Beartooth Alliance have from time to time requested a place to post feedback and other topics for discussion that relate to life in the tri-city area and environmental issues facing the organization and community. Since I am doing this work anyway, I thought it might make sense to create something that might really be useful to the organization—thus this blog. I am going to shorten the title Beartooth Alliance Blog to BAB or BABs to make typing it easier in the future. Maybe it will stick.

This site is a work in progress so if you are interested at all, or wish to create your own post, this capability should be functional soon. Let me know what you think and stop by often.
